Hi, is it recommended to use less citations or more citations for short articles? For instance for my article I get the feeling that more citations are better but not sure if that is the case:

regarding the Draft:Mehta (village)
Hello Utopes, A while back, I created a Wikipedia article called Mehta (Village), which was later moved to draft because it lacked enough references — which I completely understand. Since then, I’ve done more research and added proper references to the article. Could you please take a final look and check if there are any other errors or improvements needed. Double redirect
Hi, it's me, Erikgobrrrr (talk). I wanted to notify you that it seems you and I have made a mistake regarding my redirect request about the page Malfunction 54. We both wanted it to point to THERAC-25, but it seems the page "THERAC-25" is a redirect to the page Therac-25. And since it's a redirect, redirecting to a SECTION of THERAC-25 will not work, since it's a redirect and will instead redirect to the top of Therac-25. Could you please change the redirect from THERAC-25 to Therac-25? Thanks. Erikgobrrrr (talk) 23:58, 30 September 2025 (UTC)

AfC Category:Australian Aboriginal artworks
Hey Utopes, you declined my request at AfC for Category:Australian Aboriginal artworks, could I get some feedback? I don't hang around the categorization side of Wikipedia much, so I thought this may just be a simple request for a subcategory, but you declined it saying it was redundant to art. I'm not sure how that works, as work of art is distinct from art? I'm also not sure why you went looking for other equivalent categories, is that a policy thing? When I requested it, I was writing Fruit Bats (sculpture) and I wanted to look at how other Australian Aboriginal artworks were handled on Wikipedia (for example their sourcing and templates), and I found the process of working through Category:Australian Aboriginal art tedious. I feel like works of art is a natural subcategory of art, like galleries, artists, movements. 128.250.0.221 (talk) 10:52, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
- Hello! Yes, the page for "art" is very broad in scope, and covers a lot of material. Art is distinct from works of art. However, from a category point of view, it seems to be a different story, and uses a different definition of "art". I.e., the "Australian Aboriginal art" seems to be for works of art, and some pages in it might currently be miscategorized. When creating categories, it is important to be looking at how the new category fits into the overall category tree. If every unique population of people conducted their categorization differently, it would be confusing and cumbersome to navigate through the topic as a whole, which is why it's useful to check for local categorization practices in the specific topic area, before creating a new category/new category system/standard practice within that topic area.
- It seems to me that this, and nearly all similarly constructed "Foo art" categories, are dedicated to artworks. If it weren't, we would see more categories that contain the word "artwork" in them. Upon investigating this, there are only a handful of categories on all of Wikipedia that catch "artworks" (containing "art"), per this search: ("Destroyed artworks" is a redirect to Category:Lost works of art). And for these "artworks" categories, a lot of the time, it seems to be a slightly warped definition of "artwork", such as how Mandelbrot set is in "mathematical artworks", even though it's not an artwork in the sense of the word you and I use. Similarly, non-fungible token is a part of "digital artworks". There is only one category that is similarly constructed to the Australian Aboriginal suggestion, being "Category:Indianapolis Art Center artworks", as a location ending with the "artworks". Still, this category exists in a tree where "Category:Indianapolis Art Center art" does not exist as a parent, so it's still a different situation.
- To this end, based on this investigation, if Category:Australian Aboriginal artworks were to be created as a category, it would be completely uncharted territory to have a subcat with this naming convention, because there are no other populations or cultures which have an "artworks" category on Wikipedia beneath an "art" category. For all other tribes and peoples, the status quo seems to be that the works of art go in the "Foo art" category, while the artists go in the "Foo artists" category. I didn't see a reason why this tribe would need to deviate beyond the status quo at this moment, however, the status quo can definitely be changed! In general though, it seems that the art categories on Wikipedia are mainly for works of art, but that's just been how I've seen it be used. Utopes (talk / cont) 03:08, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thankyou so much, this makes a lot of sense, especially the stuff about consistency assisting navigation. I think part of what confused me was that the Category:Group art pages I looked at (like Category:Australian art) didn't contain works of art, because they were separated off into subcategories for paintings and sculptures. I thought for a smaller category it made sense to have a broader subcategory like works of art that you could then break up as it got bigger, but it makes sense that such a category would have poorly defined boundaries. Maybe for now categories for sculpture and paintings could be broken off? I can think of Yininmadyemi - Thou didst let fall, Aboriginal Memorial and Fruit Bats (sculpture) for the first, and Earth's Creation, Gulgardi and Warlugulong for the second. 2405:6E00:280C:4EA7:7B59:E7B2:E41:DC5C (talk) 09:27, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- If there's enough pages to support it, I think "Category:Australian Aboriginal sculpture" could be a good subcat belonging to both Category:Australian Aboriginal art and Category:Australian sculpture. Similarly, Category:Australian Aboriginal paintings would be good as a subcat of Category:Australian Aboriginal art and Category:Australian paintings. These examples would be built on the framework that's already in place, without adding new terminology ("artwork" categories in general). I would be likely to create that at AfC/C if it had 3+ pages listed for it. Utopes (talk / cont) 09:34, 6 October 2025 (UTC)

Guide to temporary accounts
Hello, Utopes. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.
Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).
Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR
, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67) - See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.
Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options →
Enable the user info card
- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
