Bird of Light Ukraine is a Ukrainian-American charitable initiative that provides humanitarian aid in Ukraine and organizes public advocacy projects.[1] The initiative consists of a Ukrainian non-governmental organization and a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity, Bird of Light Foundation Inc.[2]

History

Bird of Light Ukraine was founded in Ukraine in early 2022 following the full-scale Russian invasion.[3] Co-founder Zhanna Galeyeva organized the distribution of medical and food supplies sourced with local partners.[3] The U.S. arm, Bird of Light Foundation Inc., was subsequently registered as a federal tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity.[2][4]

In April 2022, former U.S. Congressman Tom Perriello worked with Bird of Light Ukraine to raise $1 million in Charlottesville, Virginia. The funds were designated for food, basic needs, and drones to monitor civilian evacuation routes.[1]

Activities

Humanitarian and medical aid

In 2022, the organization delivered emergency food, hygiene supplies, and medical supplies in Ukraine.[3] The group also provides psychosocial support for children in institutional care and assists internally displaced families.[5]

Advocacy and cultural projects

Bird of Light has organized public art installations to draw attention to the war's impact on children.

Empty Beds (2024): A large-scale outdoor photo installation by Phil Buehler, supported by the Bird of Light Foundation, was displayed in Manhattan’s Little Ukraine. The work, commemorating Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, was covered by The Guardian.[5] In February 2025, an "Empty Beds" media exhibit was held in Tokyo, Japan. The event featured testimony from a returned Ukrainian child and was covered by Japanese media outlets NHK and Sankei Shimbun.[6][7]

A Portrait from the People (2024): An art installation presented at the Burning Man festival in Black Rock City, Nevada.[8]

Organization

Bird of Light Ukraine is registered in Ukraine as a charitable organization (ЄДРПОУ 44733394). Bird of Light Foundation Inc. is recognized by the United States IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity.[2][4]
