Draft:Juchewave

Wikipedia

Juchewave refers to an online musical movement from the 1970s to 1990s, where slowed and reverb North Korean songs are put with videos of North Korea. Juchewave takes the North Korean aesthetic and blends it with Vaporwave, another online musical and aesthetic movement. The movement combines the word "Juche" (the Korean self reliance ideology),[1] with "wave" from Vaporwave.[2][3]

About

Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble logo

Juchewave began in the 2010s as a movement (with both political and apolitical undertones) on the internet, mainly on YouTube where various creators have made videos using famous songs from the Ponchonbo Electronic Ensemble[2][4] and the Wanjaesan Light Music band, songs such as "Are We living like we did in those days", "Chollima on the Wing" , "Heullari" and "My country is the best" are used often in Juchewave videos.[5][6][7][8]

Juchewave tries to create a nostalgic feel for past decades of North Korean history (Mainly during the times of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il). The movement usually makes the viewer/listener feel Nostalgic[9] for those times in North Korean history despite not actually being there in reality. The Juchewave movement has been used in political ways to showcase North Korea in a positive light, showcasing large buildings and patriotic monuments such as the Chollima statue and the (now destroyed) arch of reunification, whilst others simply enjoy the aesthetic and the music of North Korea in the 1980s. Juchewave videos also contain videos and images from North Korean films, many of the songs used in Juchewave music (such as “Whistle” or “Bellows”) were from North Korean movies.[10]

Themes of Juchewave

The Chollima statue

Juchewave videos usually contain music from the various North Korean bands with videos of people on the Pyongyang Metro, or the affluent areas of Pyongyang and North Korean marching and propaganda statues and artwork. The songs contained are usually propaganda songs, however occasionally more traditional songs like "Heullari" and "Bellows" are used. Juchewave creates a somewhat mysterious atmosphere of North Korea whilst also keeping the nostalgic and surreal elements.[9]
