Max Wechsler (1 June 1925 – 12 May 2020) was a French painter.[1]

Biography

Born in 1925 in Berlin into a Jewish family, he was sent to France after Kristallnacht (Reichspogromnacht) and went to live with an uncle in January 1939.

His parents and grandparents, who remained in Berlin, were deported and murdered at Auschwitz in 1943.[2]

During the German occupation, he was taken in at the Maison des enfants de Moissac[3] through the network of the Éclaireurs israélites de France (EIF). After the invasion of the southern zone, he crossed into Switzerland on 23 January 1943 and joined the Davesco camp near Lugano.

At the end of the war, he settled in Paris.

Stateless, he acquired French nationality in 1980.

He began his career as an illustrator and graphic designer at the newspaper Vaillant, a profession he practised part-time until the early 1990s, mainly for the Presses de la Cité group. His encounters with the painter Serge Fiorio during the war in Moissac, and later with René Moreu, then editor-in-chief of Vaillant, proved decisive.

In the 1950s and 1960s, he painted surrealist-inspired compositions described by Pierre Gaudibert as “organic unfoldings […] expansions of coils, swellings and fissures”, and characterised by Alfred Pacquement as “symbolic figures reflecting a work of suffering”. These pieces were exhibited by Pierre Gaudibert at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris (Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris) during the first ARC exhibition in 1968.[4]

In 1975, he met Christine Fleurent, a photographer who later became his wife.

Between 1973 and 1977, he voluntarily ceased painting[5] before turning towards abstraction, which he would never abandon: a series of works on canvas with striated surfaces, as if slashed into the material.

In 1984, he abandoned the stretcher frame and began producing large-scale works incorporating collages of various materials, papers and newspapers, creating a dense, thick surface. He titled this body of work Recouvrements papiers (“Paper Overlays”). These monumental formats were inspired by the spacious studio he acquired in 1985 in the Bastille district[6], where he worked until the end of his life.

In 1986, he exhibited these large-format works at Galerie Jean Fournier in Paris.[7]

In 1988, he met the painter Michel Parmentier, who shared his studio with him for several months.

In 1989, he befriended critic and poet Maurice Benhamou, marking the beginning of a long friendship and collaboration.

In the 1990s, his creative process focused exclusively on printed material. Typographic characters were reduced, enlarged and transformed to create works without borders or centres — luminous spaces in which matter generates colour.

This expanding universe of illegibility paradoxically attests to the permanence of origins and the impossibility of disappearance. Referring to his large- and small-scale « papiers marouflés », Wechsler stated:

« The letter, endlessly transformed and deconstructed, resists, revealing itself to be indestructible… I thus associate what will remain forever unknown with what will remain indelible »

In the 2000s, Berlin welcomed the artist back to his birthplace with several significant exhibitions, including at the Jewish Museum Berlin, Villa Oppenheim, Galerie KunstbüroBerlin[8] and the Berlinische Galerie, to which he made a significant donation in 2010.

In 2003, he was awarded the Maratier Prize.

In Paris, he exhibited regularly at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme[9], where his donation was presented in 2017, as well as at Galerie Guislain – États d’Art, Galerie ETC[10] and Galerie Dutko[11]. He also exhibited at the Musée du Hiéron in Paray-le-Monial[12], to which he likewise made a donation.

The major donation to the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris (Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris), which he initiated in 2018 and which was completed by his wife, is presented in the museum’s permanent collections in 2025 and 2026.[13]

He created his final works in 2019 and passed away in Paris on May 12th, 2020[14]. He is buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery (86th division).
