Bedford Hotel/Sussex Heights
The Bedford Hotel was replaced by a new Bedford Hotel as mentioned in its article; Sussex Heights was built on another site. Peter James (talk) 21:00, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
- Good spot; I checked the original text I had written, and somebody had edited it since and I had not noticed the error being introduced. I will reinstate the original text. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 21:43, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
Falmer House
I think the section on the University of Sussex should include a mention of Falmer House’s Grade I listing. It’s a,fairly rare, example of a 20th century Grade I listing . KJP1 (talk) 19:48, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Peer review
Buildings and architecture of Brighton and Hove
I've listed this article for peer review because it has been suggested to me that it has potential as a future Featured Article Candidate (particularly by HJ Mitchell, who has been encouraging me for some time to take this step!). I would appreciate experienced eyes to check for issues such as comprehensiveness, detail, writing style and so on, which are difficult for me to assess due to being so "close" to the article and its sources – having spent a good few years putting it together.
Thanks, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 10:46, 29 September 2025 (UTC)

Comments to follow soon(ish) - I have an FAC I promised to review first, but I’ll be here shortly afterwards. - SchroCat (talk) 21:08, 21 October 2025 (UTC)
- This is a long article, so I’ll deal with it in patches over the next few days.
- General
- You’re a bit inconsistent on hyphenating centuries
- I think you’re going to need to trim the article down a bit, given it’s so long. Things like “In one of the earliest descriptions” could be dropped into a footnote, rather than in parentheses.
- I was a bit surprised not to see Ford & Ford’s Images of Brighton in the sources. I suggest you try and have a look at it pre-FAC - it’s superb. There are three copies in the Brighton Library system.
- I think many of your date ranges (eg 2004–07) need to be in full, rather than truncated, per the MOS
- A map with the areas of Brighton would be useful for those unaware of where the various parts are in relation to one another
- Opinion quotes need to have an inline acknowledgement of who said it and an introduction (ie. "the art historian Quentin Posh-Bloke", or "the historian Peter Red-Brick", etc)
- Initials (J.T. Chappell, K.C. Wintle and T.G. Jackson) all need to be spaced -> J. T. Chappell, K. C. Wintle, T. G. Jackson, etc
- There are some OVERLINKING issues ([[Classical architecture|Classical]] is there six times, as just one example)
- It is a bit on the long side. At over 18,000 words it doesn't fit well into WP:TOOBIG
- Lead
- Any need for citations in the lead? Per MOS:CITELEAD it’s not necessary unless it’s a quote.
- “As of 2013”: anything more up-to-date?
- "under a heavy veneer of [Victorian] suburban respectability": as this is an opinion, it needs an inline identification of whose (including brief introduction, such as ‘the historian Joe Bloggs’)
- “Old villages such as” is a bit over-long. It could be broken at ‘the creation of "Greater Brighton"‘
- Early buildings
- You use both “Lanes” and “The Lanes”: consistency is key at FAC, so best to pick an option and stick to it
Done to the end of Early. It’s very nicely written and reads quite easily and well, which make it a pleasure to review. More to follow. SchroCat (talk) 19:00, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- Georgian and Regency
- "made by the Corporation": this is the first mention of "the Corporation" (which has a faintly menacing ring to it): best to full name it on first mention
- Railway age
- "a distinctive character": is this a quote? If so, it needs an inline identification (including introduction) of whose opinion it is
- "nearly 50%": should be rendered as "per cent", rather than %, as this isn't a maths or science article
- "the SS Brighton] complex"
Done to the start of Architectural characteristics. More to follow - SchroCat (talk) 11:08, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
- Architectural characteristics
- 'façades "are a defining characteristic of Brighton and Hove's historic core".[6]': again, an opinionated quote which needs inline identification and introduction
- 'brickwork "has a significant effect on a building's appearance";' Ditto
- "Nearly 90%" -> per cent
- "Architect Amon Henry Wilds", "with sculptor Joseph Cribb" -> "The architect Amon Henry Wilds" and "with the sculptor Joseph Cribb" to avoid a false title
- Types
- "About £2 million was spent", "sold for £550" It may be worth thinking about an inflation comparison for historical figures
- "F.D. Banister" -> "F. D. Banister"
- "cottagey and jazzy at the same time", "designed to resemble a castle": needs inline identification and introduction (thought the second could probably be rephrased to avoid the need for quoting
Done to the start of Commercial and industrial architecture; more to follow. I have to say I am enjoying reading this immensely – it's written in a very easy and accommodating style. - SchroCat (talk) 08:51, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
- Residential
- Link for Grade II-listed and maybe a footnote explaining what it means?
- Commercial and industrial
- "branch of W H Smith": is it? Or has it been renamed TG Jones?
- Civic and institutional
- English Heritage has awarded it Grade II listed status: May be worth putting the year for this. Your call
- "Architects Clarke & Micklethwaite", "scheme architect Christopher Dodd" -> "The architects Clarke & Micklethwaite", "the scheme architect Christopher Dodd", etc – avoiding the false title
- A£5 million replacement: missing space
- Educational
- "by Leeds architects": aside from needing a definite article, is there a need to point out they were from Leeds? Does it matter? None of the other architects are named "London architects" or "Brighton designers, etc
- "excellent interior": it may well be excellent, but it's a bit POV to state it openly in the Wikivoice
Done to the start of Seafront. - SchroCat (talk) 16:14, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- Seafront
- "The seafront was originally dominated by defensive structures and batteries": I'm not sure we can use "originally". As we've learned that Brighton was a fishing town, it begs the question of whether the fish were fighting back. A date would be a useful replacement to give some context of when we're looking at
Done to the start of Heritage and conservation - SchroCat (talk) 17:17, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- Heritage and conservation
- "The Victorian Society and The Georgian Group" should probably be, per "the Victorian Society and the Georgian Group" per MOS:THECAPS (much as you have with "the Regency Society")
- Demolished buildings
- "An especially infamous incident", "a notorious bottleneck": these are POVs, unless you can put inline mentions of whose opinion it is
- There's some sandwiching between the Asylum for the Blind, Brighton and the Brighton Co-operative building images
- Listed buildings
- "hundreds of ...": is there a firm figure anywhere of the actual amount? I suspect not, given individual classifications can cover multiple properties or items, but worth including if there is
- "condition; and permission": shouldn't be semi colon followed by and: the second part is not a full sentence, which is what should follow a s-c
- "Holy Trinity Church in Hove, declared redundant in 2010, has been threatened with demolition": should carry a "As at 2025" (in the template) just to give context and to measure of future-proofing
- "the council announced they would move a Grade II-listed shelter": if you're looking to slim down the article at all, this is sort of trivial in comparison to much of the article
That's my lot. A lovely article – beautifully written and eminently readable. Please ping me when this goes to FAC, if you decide to follow that route. – SchroCat (talk) 21:53, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
Quick comments
- The article is very very long as it stands
- It also has a number of MOS issues, which is problematic at the FAC level. For example, there are a number of instances where two or more links are presented side by side, hyphens are used to divide sentences, and year ranges are abbreviated.
- Suggest adding alt text for images. Nikkimaria (talk) 03:48, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, Nikki! I know it needs a bit of polish, and we might have to think about the length. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:03, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
Octave
Hi, I chanced on this and decided to supply some standard comments of mine on sourcing like I do at FAC, albeit on a much pared-back scale. These are mostly on a surface level and related to citation consistency per WP:CITESTYLE.
- Inconsistent use of archive links; I usually suggest running IA Bot in cases like this
- Inconsistent casing of citation titles, usually it should be fully sentence or title case at FAC
- Ref 78 is dead, so the url-status should be updated to reflect this. Also, what makes this a high-quality reliable source?
- Ditto ref 233.
- Ditto ref 322. Additionally, we don't usually put red links in references
- Inconsistent segmentation of ISBNs
- Several books are missing identifiers (ISBN, OCLC, etc.) entirely
- Generaly if you are linking authors, publishers, etc. you should link all that have articles on each occurrence in the refernce section (note that WP:DUPLINK does not apply)
- Opinions differ, but personally I don't see the need to include publisher location when it's sufficiently obvious (e.g. Oxford: OUP)
- Ref 409 probably doesn't need to include "website"
- Make sure the referencing system is internally consistent (i.e. all books/journals/council reports/etc. are treated the same as others, be that sfns, repeated references, or other methods)
- In sfn + bibliography systems, journal articles are usually given a page range in the main citation
- Generally references with no name (s.n.) are ordered by their title, not the latin abbr.
- Are you citing the reprint of Nairn and Pevsner? The ISBN doesn't match the publication date
- Per H:CS1, acronyms like ltd shouldn't be using in the publisher parameter
- Generally I see a lot of self-published references. At FAC they require sources not just to be reliable, but also "high quality". Personally, I'd want to do a run through this reference section if I was nominating to see if any sources could be replaced with those of higher quality.
- There's also some unreferenced passages (end of §Early buildings, third paragraph of §Residential architecture)
- Is it really needed to have a separate category of notes that contains one member?
That's all for now. Thanks, UpTheOctave! • 8va? 23:19, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
- @SchroCat, UpTheOctave!, and Nikkimaria: Many thanks indeed to each of you for your comments and observations. As a Peer Review newbie, I am grateful for your support. I have discussed this article extensively with Harry over the last few months, including last weekend, and between us we intend to work on the points you have raised, including trimming the article substantially. Thanks also for the pointer towards the Ford & Ford book: I'm sure it's in one of our local libraries, so will investigate. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:34, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- The comments have largely confirmed my impression that there's nothing fundamental holding the article back. It needs a bit of polish and a bit of updating in places so it's useful to get fresh eyes to point those out. I'm not surprised the length was mentioned; that's not so easy to address but it's doable. I've already started culling in places. I think we could cull quite a lot of words by sticking tightly to the subject. @Hassocks5489 I looked and apparently Ford & Ford is in both the Jubilee Library and Hove Library. I didn't check whether it was available for lending. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:49, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- Good stuff – I'll go down to Hove library at some point soon, and if it's reference-only I'll sit in and make some notes. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:51, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- Probably wise. It's £100 on Amazon! But if it's essential, we could ask Wikimedia UK for a grant. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:55, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
