Introduction to the protection policy and user groups
I see you have been contributing to an edit request at the Talk:Morocco article talk page and I wanted to introduce you to the protection policy and user groups because they both meet with the other at various points.
User groups
All users on Wikipedia are assigned to a user group. These groups range from temporary accounts and extended confirmed users; of which there are over 77,000, to bureaucrats; of which there are only 16.
Each user group have its own powers and responsibilities; extended confirmed users can edit extended confirmed protected articles such as the United States while administrators can block users (which makes them unable to edit articles but they can still view and read the site) from editing.
@You are a registered and new editor under the assignment of users while I am extended confirmed.
Protection policy
There are some people out there who unfortunately create accounts (or just do the following without creating one) to;
- Vandalise the encyclopedia;
- Engage in sockpuppetry;
- Violate the Five pillars upon which Wikipedia is founded;
Among others.
As a result, the site has a protection policy to protect articles from being edited by specific user groups.
@AlbanyParkChicago, I will go further in-depth if you'd like. Abni (talk) 00:21, 2 January 2026 (UTC)
- Uh oh did i do something wrong? AlbanyParkChicago (talk) 00:51, 2 January 2026 (UTC)
- Sure go more in depth please im a little bit confused AlbanyParkChicago (talk) 00:53, 2 January 2026 (UTC)
- Alright then, and click (or tap if you're on a mobile device) on the blue links for further information:
- Protection types
- There are four (4) types of protection:
- I (1 in Roman numerals) Editing protection: Protected from editing
- II (2) Move protection: Protected from being moved
- III (3) Creation protection: Protected from being created
- IV (4) Upload protection: Protected from being uploaded (Files only, as you cannot upload articles lol)
- Editing protection types
- 1) Pending changes protection
- Pending changes protection, the lowest on the hierarchy, is a type of protection where all edits are reviewed by a pending changes reviewer before the article is updated with them.
- Many articles, such as the one for the U.S. Congress, have this protection as it is very effective at preventing vandalism and other bad faith edits to articles.
- 2) Semi-protected
- Pages that are semi-protected may only be edited by confirmed or autoconfirmed users (users whose accounts are at least 4 days old and have made 10 edits on the English Wikipedia). Articles, such as the one for France, are semi-protected when there are significant amounts of vandalism and disruption from new or unregistered users (especially temporary accounts) or sockpuppets (alternate accounts of a user that are used for vandalism or other activities against the policies and guidelines) of banned (ability to edit retracted) (and/) or blocked (user has the ability to edit, it's just disabled) users.
- 3) Extended confirmed protection
- Articles that are extended confirmed protected, previously known as 30/500 protection (since articles that the protection applies to can only be edited by users whose accounts are at least 30 days old and have 500 edits on English Wikipedia), can only be edited by extended confirmed users, administrators and bots.
- Where semi-protection has proven to be ineffective, administrators may use extended confirmed protection to combat disruption (vandalism, abusive sockpuppetry, edit wars, etc.) on any topic (or article). Many articles that are contentious topics, i.e., real controversial topics (or articles) such as Russia or Palestine, are extended confirmed protection as they, along with every other contentious topic, have attracted more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project.
- The rest of these are less important (as they are not used often, if ever) but I will include them regardless:
- 4) Template protection
- Templates that are template protected can only be edited by administrators or users in the Template editors group.
- 5) Full protection
- Articles that are fully protected can only be edited or moved by administrators and no other user group.
- The last three protections, #6, #7, and #8, you can read on your own, as they are almost never used on any article (or other things) whatsoever.
- Are you ready for the user groups, @AlbanyParkChicago? Abni (talk) 02:25, 2 January 2026 (UTC)
- Yes!! sorry for delay i was playing a soccer game! AlbanyParkChicago (talk) 01:23, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
- No worries! Also I renamed my account from Ababajoni to MosquitoDestroyer. MosDet (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 02:00, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
- User groups
- There are many user groups, but to wrap em all up briefly:
- Users who edit but are not logged in are identified by a temporary account (previously their IP address) rather than a username, whether or not they've registered an account. They can edit any page (that's not semi-protected or higher), read any page (except restricted special pages), talk in any discussion, and cannot upload files or images.
- All logged-in users (like you as of now) may mark edits as minor and create and maintain a watchlist (essentially a page where you can track edits (among other things) on pages you added to the list).
- Confirmed and autoconfirmed accounts (the difference is that confirmed users were manually added to this group by an admin) can create articles, move pages, upload files, edit semi protected pages, make instant (not needing review) edits to pages under pending changes protection, among other benefits.
- Extended confirmed accounts can edit pages under extended confirmed protection and that's pretty much it.
- The rest you don't really need to know about (at this time since you are new to the site), but you can read up on them on your own accord here (after finishing admins just continue down). MosDet (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 02:14, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you this is actually really insightful i thought wikepedia was simplier but it is nice and complex thats very fun!!! AlbanyParkChicago (talk) 04:33, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
- Doesn't get any more simplier than this, you have many more policies and guidelines to read junior MosDet (talk | mosquitoes destroyed) 04:40, 3 January 2026 (UTC)

January 2026
You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war, according to the reverts you've made to Morocco. This means that you are repeatedly reverting content back to how you think it should be, despite knowing that other editors disagree. Once it is known that there is a disagreement, users are expected to collaborate with others, avoid editing disruptively, and try to reach a consensus – rather than repeatedly reverting the changes made by other users.
Important points to note:
- Edit warring is disruptive behavior – regardless of how many reverts you have made;
- Do not engage in edit warring – even if you believe that you are right.
You need to discuss the disagreement on the article's talk page and work towards a revision that represents consensus among everyone involved. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution if discussions reach an impasse. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you continue to engage in edit warring, you may be blocked from editing. M.Bitton (talk) 02:48, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- oh im sorry i was a little confused on how the editing aspect works i thought we talk it out there I apologize. AlbanyParkChicago (talk) 02:49, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- what is the response to the evidence i have provided though.
- Those are not cherry picked sources they come from actual reputable sources why constantly undo it when all i want was for it to be more factual? AlbanyParkChicago (talk) 02:50, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
