Hickok belt

Hey @Dmoore5556, I saw in the page history that you’ve edited this article in the past, and wanted to get your thoughts on the following I found in an article I came across: "The Hickok Belt award is best remembered for its run from the 1950s to 1976, during which the ceremony was held here all but the final years. But there also were other, lesser-known presentations. One belt was awarded in 1927 to a local fighter named Mike Conroy. That was the only one of its era. When company founder Stephen Rae Hickok died unexpectedly in 1945, his sons, Ray and Alan, took over the business and decided to award a belt in their father’s name to the middleweight boxing champion. That belt was presented in Detroit in 1949 to Jake LaMotta, who was immortalized in the film Raging Bull. After that, the Hickoks decided to move beyond boxing and present a belt to the top pro athlete in all of sports, and the Rochester ceremony was born." @GOAT Bones231012:, thanks for the above info. The noted article's claim of "one belt" being awarded in 1927 is interesting, but it presents as being independent of the first Hickok Belt, awarded to LaMotta. That said, it could be relevant background to add to the article. I would prefer to see some contemporary mention of the 1927 belt that went to the "local fighter named Mike Conroy". It may be worth searching on newspapers.com or similar for that; I can hunt around a bit in the next few days if you don't have an account there. Dmoore5556 (talk) 04:05, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
That would be much appreciated. I couldn’t find anything myself when doing a search for Mike Conroy, but I did find this interesting New York Times article mentioning LaMotta winning the belt and even describing the belt in some detail. See the following: Joe Louis, director of the International Boxing Club, which promoted the fight, stepped into the ring and presented to La Motta a solid gold and jewel-studded championship belt, a $5,000 creation of Ray Hickok made especially for the occasion, which must be won three times to become the personal property of the champion. It is an attractive design, constructed with at least a pound of gold and studded with diamonds, sapphires and rubies. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 04:30, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
@GOAT Bones231012:, I got back to the article today and incorporated both of the above noted news articles (Conroy and LaMotta) into the History section. Thanks again. Dmoore5556 (talk) 22:36, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
Just saw, looks great! Thanks for getting back it to it, totally slipped my mind. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 22:43, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

1991 Mid-air Collision crash

Hi Dmoore5556! I was trying to update the 1991 mid-air collision crash to including information on folks (John Fowler and Ivy Weeks) who saved a child during the accident. I'm new to Wiki so I must've added it incorrectly, but I was curious if there should be a way to add it?

Thank you! Sben3868 (talk) 19:45, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

@Sben3868: thanks for reaching out. I reverted a prior edit made to the 1991 Merion mid-air collision article back on November 22 because it contained copyrighted content that had been pasted into the Wikipedia article from here. Copyrighted content, including news reports that appear online, can certainly be used as a source of information. Essentially, you should add information to Wikipedia articles by using your own words, based on the information presented in cited source(s).
