@Beeblebrox: thanks for posting this. Will be good to get this settled. Wouldn't apply to either of the recent examples we were discussing, as both were making promotional edits in article space. But worth establishing consensus on the overall principle. -- Euryalus (talk) 22:34, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
The Rock line guy's edits, while clearly in an area where their username implies a COI, did not seem particularly promotional in nature to me, which is why I went for discussion. El Beeblerino if you're not into the whole brevity thing 22:44, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
Well YMMV (never actually seen the source ad for this but apparently its a saying?). You warned them after their first edit, which was to a film produced by their company but was not otherwise objectionable. However several hours after your warning they made a series of further mainspace edits to remove criticism of the film. These edits were more clearly promotional than their first innocuous change for which the warning was given. I can't guarantee they saw your warning, so maybe they still believed there was no problem with promotional edits. Either way a block seemed necessary to prevent continued promotional changes and to force their attention to the talkpage request that they change their name. Hence the block. As with the Kepri Estates guy, a name change and some indication that they understand wp:COI and possibly wp:paid would be enough to secure an unblock.
And again, thanks again for reposting the RfC, and hopefully it ends up with a clear consensus on any changes to UAA policy. I've supported the idea of advice to admins not to reflexively impose no-warning blocks on accounts whose only edits are to draft or userspace (option 1), but ofc that's not where this or the Kepri Estates guy's editing occurred. -- Euryalus (talk) 06:05, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
As a mild addendum, I agree with your RfC comment that If they ignore the concern and keep editing, especially if they add more promotional content, the discussion attempt has failed and a block is justified and uncontroversial. This succinctly describes the Rockline Entertainment scenario. -- Euryalus (talk) 20:24, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

Mariners' Mirror

Hi Euryalus, it's good to see you are still editing.

In a discussion, many moons ago, I vaguely recall you saying you subscribed to the above publication. I cannot find that conversation so I may have misremembered but I was hoping you might have access to Aberg, Alan (2005). "Saving the Victory". The Mariner's Mirror. 91 (2). Portsmouth, United Kingdom: Society for Nautical Research: 359–361. doi:10.1080/00253359.2005.10656955. S2CID 162312253.. I am interested in validating the parts of HMS Victory where it is used as a reference. I am hoping to take the article to GAN so anything I can't corroborate will probably have to be removed. Hoping you can help and thanking you in advance, --Ykraps (talk) 19:26, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

@Ykraps: hello and thanks for the message. Alas I no longer have the hard copy or a current subscription. The article is available from Taylor and Francis, if that's helpful. I'll also try to get a copy via a university library and will come back in a few days with success or failure! Also, from memory that entire volume 91(2) of Mariner's Mirror is dedicated to Victory so there's likely a bunch of other useful articles in it. If I do find a hard copy I'll email or otherwise post the best bits. All the best. -- Euryalus (talk) 22:03, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
I have access to Taylor and Francis via the Wikipedia Library but a search didn't produce any results. I assumed this was because I didn't have a high enough access level or some such thing. However, I have just carried out another search using the doi number and it came up straight away. Thanks for your help and showing an interest. If there's anything else you think I should check out, do send it my way. Best regards --Ykraps (talk) 17:43, 31 January 2025 (UTC)

Question

Hi Euryalus. WP:WARNVAND says: Brand-new accounts who repeatedly vandalize despite multiple warnings are usually blocked indefinitely, especially when there is no history of quality editing on the account. From my understanding, IPs generally need to continue after a level four warning, but this does not necessarily apply to vandalism-only accounts. OCAI-8 is a brand-new account and every edit is vandalism. Isn't three warnings sufficient here? Thanks. Mellk (talk) 10:51, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

Hi! Agree its borderline as there are no useful edits. However the final warning was given and they stopped, so in the spirit of WP:AGF I left it unblocked. They can be blocked quickly enough if their next edit is of a similar vein to their previous. -- Euryalus (talk) 10:53, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
Sure, this is not an issue. I will monitor their edits. Thanks. Mellk (talk) 10:55, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • After a motion, arbitration enforcement page protections no longer need to be logged in the AELOG. A bot now automatically posts protections at WP:AELOG/P. To facilitate this bot, protection summaries must include a link to the relevant CT page (e.g. [[WP:CT/BLP]]), and you will receive talk page reminders if you forget to specify the contentious topic but otherwise indicate it is an AE action.

Promo hard/soft blocks

Hi there! While looking at pages nominated for speedy deletion, I noticed you recently soft-blocked Wikisavemaxauto for a promotional username. Looking at their history, their sole contribution was creating an article tied to their username. As such, a hard block may be more appropriate so they’re required to address the payment disclosure policy before being unblocked. I've already gone ahead and updated the block, but I wanted to bring this to your attention in case you come across a similar situation in the future. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns regarding this. More than happy to hear your perspective! Take care, Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 01:34, 24 October 2025 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. Mildly, it might have been courteous to come here before unilaterally overturning the outcome, per WP:RAAA?. Anyway. In this case I considered the hardblock template but went with the softer one. I'm obviously a bit too softhearted. Indeed another admin once called me "milquetoast," which you'd agree is a scathing critique that I've understandably not really recovered from.
Over time I've found there's little real difference in practical requirements from the two templates. Both involve an indef block and both link to WP:PAID. Anyone seeking an unblock in these circumstances will need to meet the same requirements. The gentler wording in the softblock template can deliver better results with those rare new editors who genuinely didn't understand the rules about creating articles on their own workplaces. It's less shouty, and potentially increases the prospect of the editor realising their first approach was wrong and deciding to stick around and follow the rules. But your mileage may vary. FWIW I'd say 99% of people blocked under either template never return either way.
So with all that said: thanks again for the message, nice to meet you, and I have no objection to your change of the block template for this editor. All the best. -- Euryalus (talk) 03:21, 24 October 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for sharing your perspective! As I've been spending my time at unblocks, I often find that users who receive a soft block for their username either a) do not request an unblock (as you stated) or b) do not understand that there were issues with their editing and thus, only request an unblock based on username. As such, if the user submits a new username, reviewers are then inclined to unblock as they were not blocked for undisclosed paid editing. From my relatively short experience, this can make the unblock process more confusing than it needs to be -- for both the new editor and those reviewing the block.
Anyway, thanks again for sharing, and nice to meet you, too! Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 03:31, 24 October 2025 (UTC)
I called you names, Euryalus, really? That was brazen of me, with your Wikipedia career so distinguished as it is. I wish I too could remember it! I hope at least I didn't change a block of yours? Bishonen | tålk 07:23, 24 October 2025 (UTC).
You mean you've forgotten?!? Well that makes it worse! -- Euryalus (talk) 09:20, 24 October 2025 (UTC)
Worse also for me, who would like to be able to look back on it as one of the high points of my time here. "When I dared defame Euryalus". Ranks below my pride and joy "when I took Jimbo to WP:ARC", but not by much. Bishonen | tålk 09:53, 24 October 2025 (UTC).

Guide to temporary accounts

Hello, Euryalus. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences Appearance Advanced options Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

@Pickersgill-Cunliffe: Thank you, your message is much appreciated. Is nice to be back when I can! While you're here, thanks for all your articles ship and ship classes, especially the eighteenth century ones. Have just been looking through Beaulieu plus your old one on Charles Richardson. An entertaining read on a quiet afternoon.-- Euryalus (talk) 06:39, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for saying so! Beaulieu was a very enjoyable write, there were a lot of stories to tell. Richardson was my very first FA, so has a special place in my heart. Despite my activity lull I've continued to accumulate naval literature; I hope to start putting it to good use again soon! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 15:03, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
@Pickersgill-Cunliffe: re naval literature, did I read in a reference sonewhere that you had a book on ship names? If so, a) would you recommend it as a purchase, and b) does it cover eighteenth century vessels in any detail? My only useful ship name source for this time period is a single academic article, be interesting if there was something more comprehensive. -- Euryalus (talk) 21:41, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
@Euryalus: I do! I assume there are others that would do a similar job, but my source is Manning, T. D.; Walker, C. F. (1959). British Warship Names. London: Putnam. OCLC 213798232. I doubt there have been many brand new ship names taken on by the RN since '59, so while it isn't a new publication, it is reliable and surprisingly up to date! It has a ~66 page introduction, with pages 66-498 alphabetically listing every RN ship name, the namesake, battle honours, and a selection of specific ships to have held the name. It covers ships from the Armada to publication. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 22:00, 15 December 2025 (UTC)

It can now merge sections taken from the middle of the history of the source (rather than only the start) and insert revisions anywhere in the history of the destination page (rather than only the start). DYK for HMS Chesterfield (1745)

On 13 January 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article HMS Chesterfield (1745), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the officer who led a mutiny aboard HMS Chesterfield in 1748 later admitted that he had been "lunatick" with alcohol the entire time? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/HMS Chesterfield (1745). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, HMS Chesterfield (1745)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.
